Xerxes

King of Persia (485-465 bc). The son of Darius I, he led the 2nd Persian expedition against Greece in 480 bc. The Persians defeated the Greeks at Thermopylae, but were then defeated on sea at Salamis. A further defeat at Platea (479 bc) led Xerxes to abandon any further attempts to conquer Greece. Xerxes was assassinated
