Tortoise Tank

Designed to a 1943 specification for Heavy tank capable of breaking through fortifications, the Tortoise emerged as a wooden mock-up in May 1945 with completion of a prototype in 1947. Armed with a 32-Pdr main armament (a modified 3.7 inch AA gun) the Tortoise had a crew of seven. After trials in BAOR the project was ultimately cancelled, although the design was retained in case it would later be found necessary to produce a tank within the 70-100 ton limit.
