Royal Air Force
The most recently established of the three British armed services, the Royal Air Force was established on the 1 April 1918 from the amalgamation of the Army's Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. During the 1930s the RAF was enlarged, primarily as an independant Bomber and counter-bomber force, and from 1937 the service would receive priority over both the Army and Royal Navy in the allocation of defence funding.
In 1964 the RAF, together with the other two branches of the armed forces, was placed under the control of the Ministry Of Defence headed by the Secretary for Defence (a Cabinet Minister).
