Challenger 2

The FV4034 Challenger 2 (CR2) a Main Battle Tank being used by the Armed Forces of the United Kingdom, built by Vickers Defence Systems (now part of BAE). Succeeding the Challenger 1, it has been serving in the British Army since 1988.

Challenger 2 is manufactured by Vickers Defence Systems with production undertaken at their factories in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne and Leeds. At 1999 prices Challenger 2 is believed to cost £4 million per vehicle.

As of January 2008, two Challenger 2s have been damaged and one destroyed (by a friendly fire engagement by another Challenger 2) in combat.
