A naval battle during the Napoleonic War and a major British victory. The engagement, on the 21st of October 1805, saw a combined French and Spanish fleet of 33 ships of the line and seven Frigates under the command of Admirals Villeneuve and Gavina attacked off Cape Trafalgar by a British fleet of 32 ships of the line and five Frigates under the command of Admiral Horatio Nelson (with his flag on HMS Victory).
During the course of the battle 17 French and Spanish ships were captured and one sunk, with some 7,000 casualties inflicted, without the loss of a single British vessel. British casualties amounted to 450 killed and 1,200 wounded (including Nelson himself, mortally wounded by a sniper's bullet).
The battle is remembered by Nelson's famous signal to the fleet-"England expects every man to do his duty".
