A battle fought at Flodden Bridge, Northumberland on the 9th of September 1513. With King Henry VIII of England on campaign in France the Scots crossed the border but were soundly beaten by the English under the able Lord Treasurer (and Lieutenant General of the North), the 70-year-old Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey.
The two armies were almost equal in numbers (between 20,000 and 30,000 men. each) but the Scots were inferior in both cavalry and archers making their largely spear armed infantry an easy target for the skilled Longbow men in the English army. The English lost just 1,500 men against Scottish losses of more than 10,000 which included the death of their king James IV.
